Mary Kennedy was someone I had looked forward to reconnecting with at every class reunion.  However, she was never present at the reunions I attended (I missed our 10th and 40th).  I have some fond memories of this good-natured classmate who shared with me tremendous pride in our Irish heritage.

During our senior year a few friends celebrated Mary's 18th birthday at her comfortable Alameda home.  I always recall that we chipped in and gave her a bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume.  That was the first time I had ever smelled its distinctive scent and it was the first perfume I purchased after I began working full time.  It became my signature fragrance for many years.

In the summer following our junior year, my older sister (#5 in our family of 10 while I was #9) was pregnant with her third child.  Experiencing terrible all-day (instead of morning) sickness, my mother volunteered me to spend a weekend with my sister and family to allow my sister a much-needed break.  Now taking care of two toddlers, preparing meals, and cleaning house are loving tasks, but ones that overwhelmed me at the thought.  It was then that I had a brainstorm--how about recruiting Mary Kennedy and Kathy Wehner (they were great buddies) to help me!  Both cheerfully came on board and Mary's sweet mother even drove us to Concord, where my sister lived, and picked us up when we finished.  I can't say enough about how caring and loving Mary and Kathy were to my sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces.  It didn't surprise me when Mary went into social work advocating for children unable to do so for themselves.  She was other-centered, happy to let others take the spotlight.

May Mary rest in eternal peace!
